SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A Surfside Beach staple celebrated a milestone Thursday.
Benjamin’s Bakery is celebrating 30 years in business.
The bakery and the city held a celebration and ribbon cutting Thursday to honor the iconic business.
“I feel every bit of my 30s. But on days like today, I also feel like a first-time entrepreneur,” said Benjamin’s Bakery owner Lee Zulanch on the big anniversary. “It’s a very exciting time to have literally so much support. It’s like it’s your birthday.
Zulanch’s father opened the bakery in 1994. and named her after Zulanch’s son Ben.
It started as a wholesale bagel company, but expanded into breads, pastries, rolls, buns, cupcakes and cakes. In 2018 Zulanch has expanded the bakery’s offerings to include roasting fresh coffee and has become the largest bakery on the Grand Strand.
In addition to selling its items in the bakery, the business also provides its breads and pastries to over 100 local restaurants and retailers.
Zulanch said Benjamin’s Bakery succeeds when other businesses succeed.
“Everyone we do business with is only successful if they are.” So we try to keep the quality, the price, the product within the range that they can. If they are proud of their kitchen, we can help them tell that story,” Zulanc explained.
He added that one of the secrets to the success of the business is to keep the recipes simple and fresh, not fancy.
